I have a 9 month old Irish Setter who is lively/happy/crazy.
However he is an incredibly fussy eater and also is prone to diarrhea.
I have tried raw (nutriment and natures menu)
Kibble ( wolfworthy, Arden grange, Harrington, etc etc )
I have also tried tinned.
He initially seems keen with most but then turns his nose up and has to be tempted by adding sardines, or cooked chicken etc.
He is probably 3-4 kg underweight.
He also. seems put off when faced with say 500g in a dish.
Can anyone recommend a highly nutritious, healthy food that is likely to keep him happy, satisfied and put on weight, ideally in relatively small portions that won’t upset his stomach.
A tall order I know but all help/suggestions appreciated.
Has he got food intolerance? Could you just try a fish diet as he will eat sardines. There a couple on hear to try as a exclusion diet to see if yiu can stop his loose stool. His appetite may increase then. One of my dog’s get loose stools when he eats products with chichen is .
Also have you approached the vet incase he has medical issues causing pain on eating in his gut ect to rule that out too.
HOPE YOU GET ANSWER’S SOON.
Hi Yvonne
Thanks for your reply. Very helpful. I have been to the vets and he has been treated some time ago for a Giardia but he has always been fussy and suffered from soft stools.
Where can I find the exclusion diets and those with sardines (if you know) ?
Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards
Jim.
Gardia in dogs can return as tgey don’t develop immunity for this read on Google get him re tested and make sure of his environment and he’s not eating his own poo ect have a read on Google to get more info but get vet to re check as it could be the return of that .
Bentlys dog food is fish and veg walker and drake do one too ,but I would get him checked first incase gaurdia has returned or never was compleatly irradiated as no.mstter what food he has if he still has that he won’t get better re weight and stools .
There is also royal cainin and other companies after that have foods made vet approved it says on line why you buy that has proteins broken down for dogs finding normal meats ect hard to digest it offers soya protein ect .But please check with vet as it may not be food it may be he feels awful with a medical issue and so won’t eat or loose stools and possible discomfort.Hope you get on ok let me know .please I should imagine it’s his illness returned.
Thanks again.
He is still being checked for giardia by our vet.
Trouble is we are in amongst lots of woods and he constantly try’s to eat all sorts of unmentionables and drinks from dirty puddles. A constant battle.
Yes mine does the same ,I hadn’t considered the woods where ours goes .It’s true they pick up loads of stuff rabbit and sheep poo mine love as a snack as much as there told not too.
