Hello
Looking for some help please. We have an 18 month old ‘accident’ cross breed. He is half lab and 1/4 golden retriever / 1/4 collie. He was weaned onto pedigree and as soon as we had him home at 8 weeks he went onto Arden Grange Large Breed. He did well on it and looks great. However, as a small pup he had lots of skin problems, yeast infections and very sore itchy skin. We talked to the vet and discussed allergy testing but decided we would try the sensitive version of Arden Grange first as at the time he was too young to be allergy tested as he hadn’t seen all the seasons and his skin problems may have been pollen etc.
He’s done great on AG sensitive and is a good weight (also greedy!) by no means fat and very active. He is still a very itchy scratchy dog but doesn’t itch himself raw anymore. Aside from this he has also always had problems with very full anal glands / anal gland infections and needing to be expressed regularly. 3 months ago he had a small op to try and give him some peace from his anal glands, he was given a general and they were flushed and injected with antibiotics and thus procedure is hoped to give the dog 6 months to 2 years peace, but obviously every dog is different. Unfortunately my dog is off with his glands again and not happy.
My questions are - can anal glands issues be caused by allergies and can the glands issue be linked with the itchiness perhaps? I plan on discussing this with the vet on Thursday but wondered people’s views?
Also, he’s only ever really (bar being weaned onto pedigree) been fed on AG, could a different feed perhaps help? Could he be intolerant or not particularly agree with something in the AG feeds?
We currently get 2 12kg bags of AG for around £85 so I don’t really want to spend more than that on a feed if it can be helped.
Can anyone recommend anything that may help that isn’t ridiculously expensive?
My agility instructors dog had a similar issue and her pups issues seem to have resolved in feeding raw. I don’t really want to get into feeding raw if I’m honest but it has got me thinking about his food and glands and possible allergies. The minor op he had for his glands a few months ago can be repeated but I don’t want to get into a habit of him having a general anaesthetic every 6 months, especially as he is such a young age.
I would really appreciate anyone’s views.
Thank you
