hi, sorry for the bad taste topic ( couldn’t resist ) my Irish Doodle ( red setter and standard Poodle mix) of 17 weeks eats poo, started being very curious about my senior dogs poo, told her “leave it” which she gets, but now is eating her own too ( that’s a lot harder to manage as she isn’t quite house trained yet ( is seeming to take her a long time ) even brings bits back into her bed !!!
im mortified, she’s on Hills Science puppy and Life stages wet puppy - she’s not hungry for sure, ive read it could be too much protein, too little protein, curiosity, learnt behaviour from her mother and that is a hunting dog trait,- tried coprophagia tablets, trying pumpkin puree today - next will be pineapple !!!
I think puppies eating poo is quite common - mine did for a while and my neighbour’s sprocker puppy does - hopefully your pup will grow out of it, but my vet told me pineapple helps. Hills is total rubbish though - look it up on here.
Hi,
This is quite normal behavior for a puppy. I have 3 dogs and 2 of them ate poo when pups 1 is still a pup and will eat cat or fox poo at any opportunity.
They do grow out of it you just have to be ready when they go for a poo to reward them for going and then pick up straight away and if they go to eat it you clap you’re hands and say no. This technique worked with both of mine and i still have to use it sometimes with my pup as he’s only 10 months old and still pushing his luck!!!
As for the food side of things arden grange is a good food to use but i agree that hills science is not great.
I use a fish based diet for all of my dogs this is due to allergies and the other 1 just because its easier to have them all on fish.
I use AVA white Fish for my adult dogs and wainwright’s puppy superfoods salmon for my puppy.
But please remember when changing any diet do it ever so slowly especially with a young puppy. I have always done a 10/14 days change over to give there tummy a chance to adjust to the new food.
Hope this all helps and good luck with your bundle of joy
I wouldn’t feed any brand of kibble - even the ones with good ingredients - ultra processed and high temperatures. This is especially true of extruded kibble, which the majority, including Hills are. Cold pressed is less processed, but most contain meat meal, which requires high temperatures. Tribal uses fresh meat, which is better.
