Presence of pathogenic bacteria study

Presence of pathogenic bacteria in faeces from dogs fed raw meat-based diets or dry kibble. https://veterinaryrecord.bmj.com/content/early/2020/02/13/vr.105644

It was a very small study (only 50 dogs) which looked at the issue of the shedding of bacteria (particularly antibiotic resistant bacteria) into the environment by dogs. I could not discern the source of the raw food.

This issue is somewhat controversial, particularly among those who are proponents of raw feeding. The article contains some interesting and useful information which could be helpful to all pet owners, particularly those who feed raw dog food. Of note is the following from the concluding paragraph:

In view of the resistance problem, dogs should not be fed RMBD while they are being treated with antimicrobials, as this could increase the risk of resistant strains being selected and multiplying. Dogs in families with infants, elderly people or immunocompromised individuals should also not be fed RMBD, as these groups are more susceptible to infections.
