This mornings poo not runny like it was but very very wet and I’d say mucusy… Just tried him with some chicken and he’s had a couple of pieces only
Mucous in the poo is indicative of colitis. Could be due to infection or something he has eaten. Hope it clears up soon but a visit to the vet and medication would effect a speedy recovery.
I find that at this time of year infection is easily picked up because of the damp ground and the fact that, under the cover of darkness folk don’t always pick poo up. Two of mine had a bout of diarrhoea last winter - the old one was particularly poorly. I now clean their feet with Tesco pet wipes or rinse with warm water every time they come in from a walk. This stops the dogs from attempting to clean their own feet by licking.
I always towel his feet but that’s a good tip.
I’m taking him the vets again this afternoon as just as I was leaving for work he vomitted up the chicken.
Feel so sorry for him but hopefully we’ll get to the bottom of it this afternoon
Oh dear, it sounds as if he is really poorly. Hopefully the vet will sort it. Please let us know how you get on.
I will do later on
Back from the vets. His temperature was fine. So they took blood and are doing a full screening which I should hear back on today. They gave him an anti nausea injection, some promax in a syringe that I’m to give him for three days and some hills prescription digestive care kibble. I’ve just given him the promax and some hills which he really enjoyed… Fingers crossed he’s on the mend. I feel relieved.
I hope that the treatment has worked and he is recovering. When mine have had a gut infection they have not always had a high temperature. Once he is eating properly and his poo is firming up it might be best to keep him on his cold pressed food for now as it has earth in it which is good for digestive health. At least he seems to be coping with the Hills. It is reassuring to have them eat and keep the food down. Please let us know how he is today.
I had to get up twice in the night with him for toilet… So the hills is probably running through him. His blood was good no issues. Vet said if still runs in three days to come back and they’ll ultrasound his intestines.
Have given him the second dose of paste this morning and reduced the hills by 10%…he certainly wasn’t wanting a long walk in the s of this morning…
Will definitely be keeping him on gentle. Will get through this bag of hills till he’s stable and then wean gentle back in
I’ve had this happen to my dogs in the past and been told that the guidelines are not to give antibiotics unless there is a high temperature, blood and/or mucous in the poo. I’ve always found that Metronidazole works well and speedily but it’s a tough job getting it prescribed at my vet surgery. They insist on the Promax type of treatment instead. These days I keep Prokolin in stock to give preemptively then they can’t argue if I have tried it before consulting them.
Other half has taken him out a short while ago and no longer runs… Very soft but could be picked up which certainly sounds like progress.
Never been so happy to see a poo in all my life… Happy to report things are firming up. Am so happy!
Yes, the poo patrol is quite funny really. Who else but a dog lover would be so obsessed with it! LOL
Very glad that his is firming up and hope there are no further episodes. He has been through it, poor little mite.
I know… I’m lucky my partner has flexibility with work so he’s been able to work from home all week and be here with him.
Thanks for listening and giving advice
LS25Lee - how is your little Schnauzer now? I hope that he has recovered and the poo patrol easier. Have you had time to make a decision about his food?
Hi Dottie
So the last vet visit was the 8th Nov. So I fed him hills from then until last weekend then from Monday this week slowly started weaning gentle back in. Unfortunately as soon as I started doing that he started being sick again.
I’ve since just fed him the hills food and he’s been great. I’m going to keep him on hills at least for now, and have just ordered a 5kg bag. Whilst it may not be the best quality it’s at least agreeing with him which is my main priority at the moment.
He’s definitely enjoying a more fuller bowl than with gentle as there seems to be so much more in there. I’m feeding 140g over two meals and am weighing him weekly to check his progress.
Thank you for letting us know. Totally agree about the food - best to stick with it for now. It is what suits the dog that is important. He has been quite poorly and needs to build himself up again. Which of the Hill’s diets is he on?
I/d… I got the new bag from zooplus which was more reasonable. I think he’s either become intolerant to something in gentle or he’s just taking a while to get over this issue
Thank you for letting me know. It really is a puzzle why this has been helpful and it is hard to compare the ingredient list because the Hill’s one is not clear. The problem could be any one of a number of things but at a rough guess, maybe it is chicken. That is one of the commoner triggers for intolerance. Wonder if he would be OK with a Gentle fish? However, it is a bit of a risk purchasing 5kg - maybe contact Gentle to discuss?
Zooplus Hill’s i/d page is here.
I thought the same but the hills has chicken in it so not sure
