I guess my main problem with vegan dog food is that like all other processed dog foods it has to have nutrients added. Does it require more nutrients to be added to feed an animal that is a carnivore with adaptations that allow nutrients to be supplemented with plants and fish? If so is it really better than feeding other less processed foods which may contain meat and fish?

I am still not convinced that a vegan diet is suitable for dogs. It is still a bit of an unknown. Many have argued that it is not suitable for humans as B12 has to be taken as a supplement or added to food. In reality, lots of people who aren’t vegan lack this vitamin and others and lots of processed foods have them added. Whereas there is lots of evidence to suggest humans can do very well on a vegan diet, there just isn’t that kind of data for dogs for me to be happy to omit meat at this time. Whatever you feed, you have to feel comfortable with it.

The other problem in my opinion is dog food manufacturers. They are notorious for adding too much of a vitamin or mineral on occasions, if they don’t add the right amount of the amino acids back in then I would take a guess it would have wider repercussions on dogs mental and physical development.

I too would be reluctant to feed a vegan diet to a dog. That particular recipe has an awful lot of legumes (nearly 50%), presumably to provide protein. As the owner of a dog who is very likely intolerant of them it would be a definite no.

Some interesting points in the articles here. 2 that I find moderately contentious. Why haven’t they listed the ingredients so people can see if they contain allergens that effect their dogs before buying the product? Secondly the article about the maned Wolf, it is quite clearly stated that dogs aren’t descended from wolves so we shouldn’t assume that dogs are carnivores before going on to say that dogs should eat like maned wolves. Maned Wolf is a separate genus and not closely related to any other living canid. Perhaps dogs should eat like dogs and not be categorised in with another canid, after all there are completely vegetarian primates and some like chimpanzees that actively hunt for meat. Obviously just my own thoughts.

I have been feeding my dogs a plant based diet in the last 3 years Ia m quite convinced it is the healthiest option for them. I feed my dogs a variety of kibble, wet food andhome made food. There are several type of kibbles, wet food and supplemenys in the market

Hi, really curious about this but if the food contains D3 from animal sources how is it vegetarian? Is it because it’s from egg or fish?

That vitamin D3 is from wool fat (lanoline) so the final product can be qualified as Vegetarian but not Vegan

Thanks. Would that also be able to be considered vegan then if it’s from heritage sheep that haven’t been modified to make more fleece? This is very interesting I think.

No, it wouldn’t be considered vegan anyway as it comes from an animal.
