3 year old cocker spaniel being sick fairly often! - What food is best?

Hello,
We have a (nearly) 3 year old male cocker spaniel, who is currently on a diet of Scrumbles Wet Food mixed with Wellness Core Adult Lamb dry food.
However, we have tried many other brands before and originally started on AVA Chicken dry food. But, he is quite a fussy dog… he seems to LOVE a certain food, then he gets bored of it and refuses to eat it.
Recently though he is becoming sick more often… which is worrying. We’ve taken him to the vets, they have just said that he’s healthy, it just must be a disagreement to a certain ingredient in his food, so it’s a matter of trial and error unfortunately.

I was looking for some suggestions that:

  • Can help with his sickness?
  • Helps him to have solid stools (as he sometimes can have loose stools)
  • Isn’t too expensive (we’ve got a baby too and times are hard being on maternity leave unfortunately)
  • Good standard of dog food though, as I don’t want to offer food such as ‘Bakers’… just because I know that it’s quite fatty and it doesn’t settle well with his tummy.
Any advice or suggestions are welcome!

Thank you in advance for your help

Hello,

So you have quite a little monkey on your hands.
I would in my opinion try a fish diet and maybe add fibre to his diet to help firm the stolls.

Ava have a fish biscuits that is for sensitive tummys i would also stop the wet food and add just white fish and vegetable that can be brought frozen from supermarket’s (i buy from tesco its so cheap) and batch food some for him.

I have 3 dogs and they absolutely love having a couple of tablespoons on top or mixed on to there food and its so much cheaper than dog wet dog and its healthy.

The fibre can be brought from amazon its called pro fibre and is granules that just go in there food. I have 1 that has to have this as he has low fibre count so if missed he has very runny stolls.

Hope this all helps good luck :+1:t2:

Put him on a canine appropriate diet - a raw diet.

Scrumbles isn’t food. My dogs wouldn’t even eat the treats and when i put it out for the foxes and badgers, they wouldnt eat that rubbish either.

Most food intolerences in dogs are due to chicken or fish. Feeding your dog low quality baked foods is making him sick.

Try Paleo Ridge. Your dog should be eating 5 different proteins over a five week period - so you do it by trying one protein at a time - try raw beef mince for a week, if that doesnt upset his tummy, you then try lamb for a week, then chicken, then fish and so on until you work out what he can eat and what he can’t.

You dog isnt being ‘fussy’. He trying to tell you the food you are giving him is making him sick because it’s not canine appropriate.

Most commercial dog foods contain very little real meat and lots of ‘fillers’ which are usually grain and carbohydrates - which dogs do not need in their diet and should only have a bare minimum of them or preferably none whatsoever.

Dogs are no longer to the age they should do , due to poor commercial diets.

Switch to Raw minces - someone like pro dog or paleo ridge are both good brands. Join a raw feeding social media group for support and more advice on raw feeding.
