I’ve been following the ‘Good food on a budget’ thread and I guess this question is similar, but I’m wondering wether anyone can recommend a good quality kibble that doesn’t cost the earth? For the bulk of her meal, I feed my girl Rocco Classic tinned food (about 4.3 on the site), but I like to add a handful of kibble to it even though it’s not really necessary. A chap on the market near me was selling 7kg bags of Lily’s Kitchen for £15 (normally about £35), but his supply has run out and so is mine. I know what I should and shouldn’t be looking for in a food, but recommendations would be make the task a bit easier. I know in the ‘budget’ thread people were saying stuff like Wagg and supermarket brands are OK, but I would prefer to steer clear of these if possible.
Have you looked at millies dog food they do good quality kibble , I have used them in the past, lots of different flavours, but now my dog does better on wet food. The prices vary but one of them was £19.00 for 4kgs. May be worth a look. 
When I am choosing a top up, or complementary food, I tend to look at the composition of the base product first. It is a bit rough and ready but if, for example the (dry) base food has a higher than average carbohydrate content and perhaps only about 25% protein I would look for a topper that would redress that to some extent. It would therefore be one that has a low carbohydrate and higher protein.
I don’t know about Rocco wet food but if it has a high protein/fat content and low carb then you could probably afford to use something like Skinner’s Field and Trial Duck and Rice. It is a plain, simple food with no red ingredients. Alternatively, the products that are really good value for money (IMO) are the cold pressed ones from Markus Muhle. They score well on the Directory and as the food is quite dense the amount needed is smaller than many other products.
Everybodys idea of cheap is different, so its easier to say what are good options for a big bag price of £x and whether you need grain free etc?
Taking Lillys Kitchen as an example, at full price i find it a very overpriced food compared to long term genuine stalwarts at the quality end of the dog food market like Acana.
Acanas entry point food (Prairie Poultry) works out around £36 (with loyalty scheme) for a big bag, as long as oats are acceptable to you it is a brilliant food at this price. (available at independent pet supplies only as far as i know, )
Grain free around the £30 mark for a big bag could lead you to Autarky Grain Free; or for around £20 Autarky chicken.
Its horses for courses, why not try an independent shop and tell them your budget and all about your dog etc and see what they can offer you.
Sounds like a plan Warfieldwolf, but would they have your dogs interests at heart, and how likely are they to know what’s good and what isn’t? I was thinking in terms of up to £25 for a large bag, or £15-20 for a 7kg bag. As mentioned I had been able to get the 7kg bags of the Lily’s Kitchen grain free grass free Lamb, and a couple of their other flavours for £15/bag, but the guys supply has now run out, so I’m looking for a similar quality at a similar price
I dont know if they would, but they should and they should offer you choices whereas in my experience chain stores offer you their own brands.
If their opinion on whats good and whats not ref ingredients matches this site, then they know - its all about ingredients.
£25 for a large bag is a challenge - but as before Autarky fits well into this price and Acana Prairie Poultry is amazing quality for £36 and you wont use much of it compared to others.
Failing that, find some that fits your price and then compare on here before trying.
Autarky salmon probs as low as I would go money wise if on a relatively tight budget. Not fed it myself but would be my choice if I had to select a fairly decent value kibble. Some Csj products worth a look but factor delivery costs. Skinners worth a look. F&T fine but a friend has fed rough & ready to working dogs…ok if you like that type of thing.
