anti inflammatory dog foods

Hi, I have a poor English springer spaniel who unfortunately has srma and relapsed twice. I am looking into her diet and trying to find the best foods for inflammation in the UK. Is anyone able to help or advise. Thank you

Hi Christine, I am so sorry about your poor spaniel having srma.

IMHO a diet low in grains (including rice) and carbohydrates, and high in fresh ingredients (added yourself if needed) is a good place to start. Personally, I would either feed a raw diet (complete), fresh gently cooked diet (complete) or a homemade diet (supported by nutritionist/veterinary nutritionist).

Berries (such as blueberries and blackberries), cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower), and dark leafy greens (kale, spinach)… are all brilliant things you can add to your dog’s diet to help reduce inflammation as they contain antioxidants and vitamins.

I would say even more important is to have a diet high in Omega fatty acids (found in fish and fish oils), and containing Curcumin (found in turmeric - The Golden Paste company do a good one), green-lipped muscles and a small amount of ginger if possible. These are all anti-inflammatory and work in humans too.

Of course, add things in moderation and slowly introduce them, and consult your vet if you have any questions/worries.
Another option is to research finding a holistic vet or nutritionist to help you, also Dogs Naturally and Four Leaf Rover are brilliant websites that have some good info too.

Wishing you all the best! Alana x

You may consider a limited-ingredient diet (LID), may be helpful if your dog has food allergies or sensitivities that contribute to inflammation. An LID contains a single protein source and a limited number of carbohydrate sources, which can make it easier to identify and eliminate potential allergens.

I second lanikestle’s advice. Also consider adding Golden Paste (turmeric) to the diet as it is a proven anti inflammatory. Different Dog is a supplier of gently cooked fresh food and this ingredient is included in their recipes.
